Instead of books randomly dropped by mobs that permanently teach spells, it might be better to have craftable scrolls with limited durability instead. Being able to craft the spells you desire seems more fun than praying for them to randomly drop. Furthermore, making them non-permanent makes it so you're not 'done' once you've obtained the max rank of a spell, and also doesn't make your magical powers immune to death (experience, gear, and loot are also lost upon death, but of course your mana won't be).
Exactly how these scrolls should be crafted, remains to be designed.
