What happened?

I attempted to join a LAN server with a friend (same version of ATM, same MC launcher version, same WIFI), and his LAN never came up under the Multiplayer connections available. Are there any things we could do to troubleshoot? It seems like most other threads are written about formal servers/not LAN specific.
