I never use the forums search because I never understand the UI. It would definitely be great though if we can make it work in a sensible way within the app.

Search is (was?) a platinum-only feature. I'm ok with pushing people to buy plat, but maybe we consider kicking out to a google search site:forums.somethingawful.com if logged-in user can't search forums.

Here's a mock of one possible interface:

I haven't really thought through whether this is something we do contextually (e.g. a search bar atop the forums list, thread lists, etc.), or in a dedicated tab, or both, or something else.

There's also searching within a thread to consider.

And finally there's "find in page", which doesn't really need any kind of server hookup.

Probably makes sense to break this issue into a few smaller ones if anyone decides to start tackling this.
