Jim Stigler, PhD and Mary Tucker from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) are conducting a research study.
You were selected as a possible participant in this study because you are 18 years or older and because you have not previoulsy had experience with computer programming.
Your participation in this research study is voluntary.
The goal of this study is to investigate how to enhance computer programming instruction in online learning environments.
If you volunteer to participate in this study, the researcher will ask you to do the following:
- Complete some questionnaires that examine your attitudes
- Complete a prior knowledge task
- Complete an introductory programming lesson
- Complete some computer programming tasks
The study will take 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete online.
This study poses minimal risk to participants. Potential risks of participation include feelings of fatigue and frustration related to performance.
You will not directly benefit from participating in the study. However, the results of the research may inform us of the various factors that better understand how students learn from online coding instructon.
If you choose not to participate, then you are free to write a paper or participate in another research study being conducted by other researchers to receive course credit (please check with your instructor for specific guidelines).
Participants recruited from the UCLA Psychology Department Subject Pool will receive 1 course credit for your 1 hour online session. The 1 course credit will be given at the end of the online session.
You can choose whether or not you want to be in this study, and you may withdraw your consent and discontinue participation at any time.
Whatever decision you make, there will be no penalty to you, and no loss of benefits to which you were otherwise entitled.
You may refuse to answer any questions that you do not want to answer and still remain in the study.
