Weird problem - Onedrive starting automatically but not through service file

I cannot figure out how this happened. Onedrive is the newest version:

$ onedrive --version
onedrive v2.5.3-33-g1d00a52

And it is running:

$ ps -ax | grep onedrive
1369035 ?        Ssl    0:41 /usr/local/bin/onedrive --monitor

But it is not through the service file which is disabled:

$ systemctl status onedrive@$USER
○ [email protected] - OneDrive Client for Linux running for $USER
     Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/[email protected]; disabled; preset: enabled)
     Active: inactive (dead)
       Docs: https://github.com/abraunegg/onedrive

If I enable it through the service file, two instances attempt to run and the second one fails.

I'd like to manage onedrive through systemd but am not sure how to proceed.

Fist some questions:

1. What distribution are you using?
2. Did you ever install the client from a distribution package?

Never. Only ever installed via CLI. Configure/make/make install.

I agree! I am stumped! I don't even understand how it is being started.... If I kill the process, it just starts up again, but I cannot find any service files whatsoever, other than those in /usr/share. It is also not listed as a startup application for gnome.

The issue here is .. your problem is the exactly the case when installing from Debian and/or Ubuntu provided packages ...

This cannot occur when compiling from source.

Please have a look at the following:

Ensure that there is no symbolic link being created / or has been created.

There are no [email protected] or onedrive.service files on my machine other than in /usr/share:

$ sudo locate [email protected]
/usr/lib/systemd/system/[email protected]
$ sudo locate onedrive.service
/usr/lib/systemd/user/onedrive.service

This machine is relatively new and I never used the distribution package on it because I want the newest version.

Any other way to troubleshoot how the instance gets restarted? I can't think of any other place where it would be started. Only thing I can think of is to remove the application entirely and see if I can trace any resulting errors?

It is not starting via a user service

Please read that link more carefully:

/etc/systemd/user/default.target.wants/onedrive.service

This is what is potentially 'starting' the application

Sorry if I wasn't clear, there are no onedrive-related service files in /etc/systemd/user/default.target.wants/

Is there somewhere else I should look? locate did not find any onedrive-related service files anywhere other than /usr/lib

Do you have the Onedrive GUI installed at all ?

No, I didn't even know there was a Onedrive GUI.

OK .. post a system reboot, what is the full output of this command:

sudo ps -aufxw | grep onedrive

This should at least show what has started the application if anything.

Otherwise .. you need to track back through how you installed / what documents you followed to install the client. There is so much mis-information out there. Your resources to install the client should be the documents on this GitHub site only.
