new stratux building project, some questions...

Hi,
I finally got my hands on a new raspberry pi 3B at a reasonal price 70USD sd card included.
I bought my 2 SDR NoElec nano3's, and my "GPYes 2.0 u-b;ox 8 usb gps unit".
a few questions:

1. Does it matter in which of the 4 usb ports on the pi3B you stick in 2 sdr's and gps ?

2)The noelec nanao 3 sdr's come with 4 antenna's, 2 smaller and 2 bigger ones. Which one are preferred ?

3. If i want to mount the stratux box (case) a bit more remotely under the dashboard, and the antenna's on the side of the front window in the cockpit, i see different posibilities, what would be best ?

a) use the antenna's that came with nano3 mount them with 3d printed box or suction cups remotely left and right of the front window and use coax-extension cable to bring it to the pi3B?

b) use di-pole antenna's (also sold by pilotaware) and mount them with suction cups on the side part of front window, use coax extension cable to go to the pi3B

c) use the antenna's that came with nano3 and mount the antenna and sdr in a little 3d printed box (1 box left and 1 box right-side of the window), and go from there with usb-extension cables to the pi3B. (i did not find any example of somebody using usb-extention cable instead of coax cable, so bad idea?)

4. In case of the dipole antennas, which di-pole antenna's would be recommend?:

ps: I use the safesky app, and hopefully soon in combination with stratux, best of both worlds. I saw Pilotaware has now igrid, which would be something similar ?

1. No. I'd put the GPS in one of the upper USB ports so the patch antenna is not covered by the SDR.
2. For ADS-B it doesn't really matter. For 868Mhz, I'd use the longer ones
3. / 4. Again, for ADS-B it doesn't really matter/you could just keep the standard antenna under the dashboard and it would be enough.
   For 868Mhz I guess you have to decide that for yourself. Or maybe @VirusPilot has some input. I heard good things about the dipoles in general.

I understand i will probably need to reprogram at least 1 sdr which will be tuned 978mhz, and change that into 868mhz. And check that the other one is 1090mhz. Found on some nice video youtube "deltamikeheavy" on that.

1)But then i read you need to ppm program or finetune the sdr's also ? I have the noelec nano3 sdr's, is it necessary to do this ppm finetuning with these model sdr's ?

2. Read also about a physical safe shutdown switch on dross.net, in order to avoid SD card problems, is this still the case ?

Dont need to do anything. If 868mhz is enabled and UAT ia disabled on the web interface, it will automatically reassign. Nano 3 has a TCXO, so no calibration needed either.

The power switch is completely useless. Stratux uses a read only filesystem. And even if its disabled, it usually works fine if you use a decent sd card (I always use RW filesystem and just unplug power. Didn't have a single SD failure in 4 years or so).

I agree with @b3nn0 that dipoles are generally recommended, particularly with a remote connection to the Stratux. Prodrone actually provides 1090Mhz tuning but you have to ask explicitly for it.

Indeed I do fly a Virus SW 100 but I admit I have an AT-1 installed. If I would have to install antennas internally then I would use one of the above mentioned dipole antennas left and right inside the windshield. If you have an option outside then you could consider this one here (I moved the ELT antenna inside):

That looks nice and clean. But unfortunately i am dealing with an EASA certified LSA, with limits my installation possibilities to avoid expensive installation costs. Mounting the stratux case with standard sdr antennas on the dashboard is not really an option, as i find the forward visibility already limited. So i will go with 2 dipole antennas , 1 left and 1 right of the forward window. Question is which dipole antennas? The one used by pilotaware i can find on different webshops, and looks ok to install with 2 suction cups. The ones from the polish drone webshop looks more thin and slim, not sure how to install them on the windows? Where did you mount the raspberry pi and sdr’s? Or stratux-case? I was thinking of mounting it in the glove compartment or under the dashboard with belcro , so it’s still no permanently installation and legal in my case. Mounting a dipole antenna and sdr on the leftside and right side of the window and connecting it with the raspberry pi using usb extension cable would be also a solution, you think this would work or not recommend? I am only using a fully portable Stratux with antennas attached and mounted with a suction cup at my Virus panel.

You can certainly go with these dipole antennas from PilotAware which are also available at air-store.eu.
