Phantom columns in Excel spreadsheet break import

Users play around with Excel, probably formatting the whole workbook or adding filters or something, and then the import process sees a bunch of ghost/empty columns and goes crazy. I think. This is based on a particular case, where the Excel was >1MB, but copying the values to a new template reduced the file size to 32K and fixed the issue.
