There is now a branch called "footnotes". If we like it, merge it. If we hate it, delete it.

I think endnotes is probably better for this. Some of the footnotes are really long (e.g., on page 3 there is now a footnote that takes up ~2/3 of the page and there's many instances of this behavior). In general I think footnotes should be avoided, because if what's said in them is so important, then say it in the text. The paper can be read perfectly well without reading the notes, so I think having them as endnotes is better in this case.
