I see DuckDuckGo for chrome come in the search just by typing:
'd' and space..when the description says only pressing Tab can make that option applicable.
This makes all my queries which have 'd ....' go through duckduckgo by default/

There is no way around this, it is Chrome's own behavior to trigger whatever a keyword is meant to trigger on pressing either Tab or Space. The only solution would be to change the keyword the extension uses to something you will never search for. Unfortunately, changing it to anything longer than a single character will make the extension significantly less usable, given that only after typing the keyword and entering "extension mode" can the extension offer instant search suggestions for you (#48).
