top has an option to run for n iterations:

   -n  :Number-of-iterations limit as:  -n number
        Specifies the maximum number of iterations, or frames, top should produce before ending.

This is useful when passed to other utilities, for example:

$ lntop -n 1 | grep inactive | wc -l
3
