Convert code to python to simplify the yaml

There now is a lot of custom c code in the yaml which makes the project unable to port to esphome. to allow easier adoption, i want to move all code and customizations from yaml to python and eventually upstream.

i have had a start on this in my own project and borrowed parts already but I currently don't have a lot of time to complete this. all attempts to move the next bits to python have stranded, but i want to pick this up and wanted to create an issue for it so everyone is aware :)
