https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:emergency%3Dwater_tank

In Australia emergency water supplies are now mandated in some areas of high fire risk. It would be useful to have these rendered on the map to support fire fighting resources. Its currently used around 16,000 times across the globe (both nodes and ways).

A suggestion for a suitable symbol could be the 'Australian All Hazards Symbology" for a waterpoint which is a simple circle with the letter W in the middle. https://www.emsina.org/allhazardssymbology

AAHS_FIRE_OP_WATER_POINT

Alas I am no coder so I cant submit a pull request. Any assistance appreciated.

An alternative render could be the Mapnik Emergency symbols https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/projects/mapnik_fire_overlay#tags

Thanks for the suggestion. A language specific symbol will likely not work for this style of course. Due to the functional similarity to emergency=fire_hydrant a common symbol design principle for both might be a good idea.

All of this however depends on a resolution to #3635.

Is this a feature that is useful for a general-purpose map?

Almost all of these features can be tagged with an additional tag which we already support: e.g. man_made=storage_tank for covered storage tanks (rendered with an icon currently), natural=water for lakes, landuse=reservoir for artifical open-air reservoirs, man_made=reservoir_covered for covered reservoirs (See #2620).

This tag provides that additional information that the water supply is intended or available for emergency use, but that information is rather specialized.

Since many of these are man_made=storage_tank features, we would need to consider removing the icon for that feature (though they could be rendered as buildings) if we were to render this tag with an icon.

Thanks @jeisenbe I have since discovered that a dual tagging of

emergency=water_tank and
man_made=storage_tank actually renders them on the map as symbol similar to a fire extinguisher (somewhat appropriate)

@tastrax - the fire symbol is from an area tagged amenity=fire_station, which also causes the area to be rendered with the pink fill and outline. It is not related to the emergency=water_tank tag. But you are correct that those two symbols above are the rendering for man_made=storage_tank.
