With the potential for staff time tracking, need to decide on a communications system. Queues (for example, ActiveMQ) would work, but that would be another dependency/installation/management thing.
Just checking a certain directory for files worked well with the staff import scripts.
Thoughts:
Messages shouldn't be lost if the service on the remote end isn't up (hence, queues)
Separating services by difference concerns still seems like a good idea
