Byfar my favorite CSS/image spriting tool was glue, but I haven't really done any work in this area for a long time. I'm not currently sure what the landscape looks like in the node community, but last I recall there was a severe lack of tools for this in node/npm.

If one doesn't already exist, this is a really prime candidate for mako. (but I would still want to try and make something generic and re-usable outside of mako)
