Is this why, pattern recognition algorithms like regression are so common in machine-learning.

Maybe yes.

An issue with ML and AI "hype" today is pattern recognition algorithms and systems are talked about but it's not so common to hear why "pattern recognition" is so important for intelligence.

Discovering and acknowledging this can serve as motivation to learn pattern recognition techniques.
