Wondering this myself. I just built up a new board prototype that will need a custom compiled firmware, so would rather not build it with mbed if that's going away soon. |

may I suggest RIOT ?
it supports tons of boards, very portable, is very light, realtime, has a GNU make based build system. Pretty bare metal but quite powerful. It would allow to use many many more microcontrollers for Remora and hopefully abstract most if not all the hardware dependent stuff.
