This base theme is a great start, and I think it will speed up the creation of custom themes for clients.

One thing I wonder: Do we want it to be useable out of the box? Like with sidebars in their proper place and the headings set to relative sizes?

The Stark theme in core is a bit like that.

No worries if we just want to always take care of layout in the subthemes, since most sites will be quite different in their needs, but I'm curious what others think.

I think the initial idea was that this would be a baseline theme to build off of (as in we would copy it and change it to meet a project's needs). I was under the assumption that it would not be a standalone theme, and that the main usage would be using the theme and building upon it, but not creating a sub-theme.

That being said, we can always discuss further and alter the theme if others have different ideas.

I'm up for a discussion of base theme vs. starting template. I'm sure there are pros and cons for each, but at the moment I have no preference.
