Are you using snap or flatpak?

I'm having this issue as well. I can't speak to the OP, but I'm using Flatpak also on Linux Mint 21.2 with Cinnamon DE.

Potentially related...when manually running emote, it doesn't utilize dark mode either.

I moved to arch but I installed it straight through mint's software menu.
I'd like to know though, I need an emote set up on this installation too

dark mode worked for me, odd, but yeah it doesn't autostart which is worse
saying there is a gui though I believe adding a toggle for it into that may be the way to go so people have options
Until he fixes it I recommend making a simple bash script, placing it somewhere with your .ini files and just having that autolaunch for you, then just delete it later if he rolls a fix out
because I really do like the software, it's super simple and honestly better than the windows emote tool hahaha

Unsure if this is related, running on ubuntu 23.04, only works if a second instance is loaded (i.e., enter emote into terminal, THEN either click on emote app in menu or Ctrl + Alt + E)

I'm encountering the same issue on Mint 21.3 Cinnamon, using the Flatpak.

I can still launch the application via the terminal. I do receive a few errors though, which I'm including below in case they're any help in troubleshooting.

flatpak run com.tomjwatson.Emote
Gtk-Message: 22:30:22.936: Failed to load module "xapp-gtk3-module"
Launching emote daemon
ERROR:dbus.connection:Unable to set arguments ('', {'reason': 'Emote autostart', 'autostart': True, 'background': True, 'commandline': dbus.Array(['emote'], signature=None)}) according to signature None: <class 'TypeError'>: Expected a string or unicode object
Failed to enable autostart: Expected a string or unicode object
Setting theme New=[System Default] Current=[Mint-Y-Dark]

Then, whenever I launch Emote using my assigned hotkey, I get the following message in the terminal window.

(emote:2): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 22:30:33.576: gdk_window_get_state: assertion 'GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed
