Extensions: Tiling Assistant #79
Comments
Hello, I like the extension but it has one issue that needs to be addressed on multimonitor systems. I will report it soon on the project itself. It also has some limitations that are related to some stuff being handled by mutter especially. I will write a more complete report of usage at a later time. |
Another aspect that should be considered is that this extension alters the distance at which the tiling activates, at least on my dual-monitor setup. I'm going to report this to the extension, hopefully soon enough. Edge.Test.webm |
Another direction: https://github.com/DEM0NAssissan7/mosaic is an extension that's being developed to test some of the recent GNOME design work around window management. I haven't tried it yet, but once we feel it's generally usable, we could consider including it instead. |
It's great to see interesting and innovative solutions to an old problem being taken into consideration and approached so quickly; I've tried it, it's still in very early development but this could surely be very interesting. I will be testing it on both my laptop and dual monitor setup whenever it reaches some stability. |
This is actually coming in Ubuntu, but it approximates the direction we want to go upstream in GNOME as well. While it's not “true” tiling (Mutter doesn’t know about the tiling, and thus doesn’t style windows with their tiled states), it could be helpful as it adds two features I love: quarter tiling plus tiling suggestions (like Windows Snap Assist).

I'm testing it a bit before suggesting default settings, but it could be interesting to include.
