This month, the Bay Area Open Science Group will be joined by Elana Chan, a Civil & Environmental Engineering PhD Candidate in the Boehm Research Group studying how wastewater monitoring data may be interpreted for public health action. Elana was recently awarded the Stanford University Libraries Data Sharing Prize for her transparent research practices including publishing her data and code alongside her research papers with detailed documentation in the Stanford Digital Repository.

This workshop will provide a review of the Python programming skills and techniques used in the upcoming Machine Learning and Natural Language processing workshops. Topics will include string manipulation, data types and conversion, pandas dataframes, and data formatting and preparation. Programming tools will include Jupyter Lab, Google Colab, and Generative AI coding assistants.

This workshop is part of a broader series covering programming for the digital humanities, with an emphasis on document and text analysis. Although these workshops do not have any formal prerequisites, some background in Python and SQL would be helpful. These workshops will build on material from previous sessions, so it is recommended but not requred to take the workshops in sequence.

This workshop will introduce topic modeling, a common natural language processing technique used to identify topics within a collection of documents . Participants will use Python, scikit-learn and Gensim to identify hidden patterns and topic clusters within a series of wide-ranging lectures. This workshop will also review methods to read and analyze transcripts from YouTube videos.

\n\n

This workshop is part of a broader series covering programming for the digital humanities, with an emphasis on document and text analysis. Although these workshops do not have any formal prerequisites, some background in Python and SQL would be helpful. These workshops will build on material from previous sessions, so it is recommended but not requred to take the workshops in sequence.

Sridevi is a second-year PhD student in Global Health and Development at the Emory Rollins School of Public Health, specializing in water, sanitation and hygiene. Prior to Emory, she was a Senior Research Associate at the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie), where she was involved in their Transparency, Reproducibility and Ethical Evaluation Initiative. Sridevi will discuss a checklist to guide sensitivity analyses and replications of impact evaluations.

Join Makers Lab staff for the second pop-up in a three-part series covering the basics of 3D design & modeling using the web-based application Tinkercad. This pop-up is for beginners, but all skills levels are welcome to attend.

After attending the 90-minute pop-up you will be able to:

  2. Export a model out of Tinkercad for 3D printing

  3. Locate resources for continuing your learning with Tinkercad

Make sure to sign up for a Tinkercad account before the pop-up and use a three-button if you have one available. You don't even need to download Tinkercad, it is a free, web-based application that you can use anywhere, as long as you have an internet connection.

Do you have a CT scan you would like to convert to a 3D print?

\n\n

Join Makers Lab staff to start creating 3D printable models from CT scans. Note: this pop-up will focus on converting and 3D printing models of bone. Learn how 3D printing is helping to improve medical education, research, and patient education.

\n\n

We encourage attendees to use their own laptops and download the 3D Slicer software prior to the pop-up, available for free for Mac and Windows. A three-button mouse is recommended, but not required. De-identified DICOM files (CT scan) will be provided at the start of the pop-up.

\n\n

This month, the Bay Area Open Science Group will be joined by Elana Chan, a Civil & Environmental Engineering PhD Candidate in the Boehm Research Group studying how wastewater monitoring data may be interpreted for public health action. Elana was recently awarded the Stanford University Libraries Data Sharing Prize for her transparent research practices including publishing her data and code alongside her research papers with detailed documentation in the Stanford Digital Repository.

This workshop will introduce techniques to generate transcripts and annotations from video, audio, and image data. Participants will learn to use open source and cloud based API tools to extract transcripts from different media types, along with methods to evaluate the accuracy and completeness of transcription data. Programming tools will include Jupyter Lab, Google Colab, and Generative AI coding assistants.

Join Makers Lab staff for the second pop-up in a three-part series covering the basics of 3D design & modeling using the web-based application Tinkercad. This pop-up is for beginners, but all skills levels are welcome to attend.

This workshop will provide a review of the Python programming skills and techniques used in the upcoming Machine Learning and Natural Language processing workshops. Topics will include string manipulation, data types and conversion, pandas dataframes, and data formatting and preparation. Programming tools will include Jupyter Lab, Google Colab, and Generative AI coding assistants.

\n\n

This workshop is part of a broader series covering programming for the digital humanities, with an emphasis on document and text analysis. Although these workshops do not have any formal prerequisites, some background in Python and SQL would be helpful. These workshops will build on material from previous sessions, so it is recommended but not requred to take the workshops in sequence.

This workshop will introduce topic modeling, a common natural language processing technique used to identify topics within a collection of documents . Participants will use Python, scikit-learn and Gensim to identify hidden patterns and topic clusters within a series of wide-ranging lectures. This workshop will also review methods to read and analyze transcripts from YouTube videos.

\n\n

This workshop is part of a broader series covering programming for the digital humanities, with an emphasis on document and text analysis. Although these workshops do not have any formal prerequisites, some background in Python and SQL would be helpful. These workshops will build on material from previous sessions, so it is recommended but not requred to take the workshops in sequence.

This month the Bay Area Open Science Group will be joined by Sridevi Prasad. Sridevi is a second-year PhD student in Global Health and Development at the Emory Rollins School of Public Health, specializing in water, sanitation and hygiene. Prior to Emory, she was a Senior Research Associate at the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie), where she was involved in their Transparency, Reproducibility and Ethical Evaluation Initiative. Sridevi will discuss a checklist to guide sensitivity analyses and replications of impact evaluations.

Want to create your own models to 3D print in the Makers Lab?

Join Makers Lab staff for the second pop-up in a three-part series covering the basics of 3D design & modeling using the web-based application Tinkercad. This pop-up is for beginners, but all skills levels are welcome to attend.

\n\n

After attending the 90-minute pop-up you will be able to:

  2. Export a model out of Tinkercad for 3D printing

  3. Locate resources for continuing your learning with Tinkercad

Make sure to sign up for a Tinkercad account before the pop-up and use a three-button if you have one available. You don't even need to download Tinkercad, it is a free, web-based application that you can use anywhere, as long as you have an internet connection.

Do you have a CT scan you would like to convert to a 3D print?

\n\n

Join Makers Lab staff to start creating 3D printable models from CT scans. Note: this pop-up will focus on converting and 3D printing models of bone. Learn how 3D printing is helping to improve medical education, research, and patient education.

\n\n

We encourage attendees to use their own laptops and download the 3D Slicer software prior to the pop-up, available for free for Mac and Windows. A three-button mouse is recommended, but not required. De-identified DICOM files (CT scan) will be provided at the start of the pop-up.

\n\n

After attending the 90-minute pop-up you will be able to:
