I think create gist for new version of android will be very helpful for new users.

As a workaround, the code will work fine if you do NOT update anything.
Do NOT update Gradle.
Do NOT update any dependencies

When you are first prompted at the starter code, choose to install Build Tools 24.0.1 so you can run the project as is. You should be able to launch and run the app.

I first tried updating everything and then ran into dependency conflicts because of AndroidX.

Now a day everything depends on Jetpack Library. I am not sure, I think it will be a bad idea to stay in the project without adapting anything.
