Bending and axial deformation of a rigid frame

Download Example 1 model (v2.7.0)

Description

An one-story, one-bay rigid frame is subjected to a uniform vertical load along the horizontal beam. A model with combined bending and axial deformation has been created for this example. The resulting vertical displacement measured at the center of the horizontal member obtained from the analysis program GiD+OpenSees is compared with SeismoStruct results. The model lies in the X-Y plane.

Geometry and Properties

Material Properties:

E = 206.143 GPa

G = 79.2858 GPa

Section Properties:

A = 0.0058 m2

I22 = 4.579e-5 m4

I33 = 1.544e-5 m4

J = 2.231e-7 m4

Modeling and Loading

A uniformly distributed load is applied on frame elements 3 and 4 as element permanent forces in the Y direction (Fy = -17.512 kN/m)

Analysis Type

Static analysis (with geometric nonlinearities disabled)
