Background

There's builder kit currently comes with exporters for Gmax 1.2 and 3ds Max 5, 8, 9, and 2009.

Gmax was discontinued by Autodesk back in 2005. Although TurboSquid continued to provide the download and registration codes for many years, TurboSquid removed the download and registration page in July of 2021 at the request of Autodesk.

Although Previewer does support importing COLLADA files, developers have struggled to get satisfactory results.

The goal of this project is to provide an alternative exporter for Blender, which is a free and open source 3D creation tool with active development and support.

Installation

To install the exporter...

  • Download the latest release
  • From Blender, select the menu Edit > Preferences...
  • Click the Install... button
  • Select the downloaded archive and click Install Add-on
  • Check to enable Import-Export: There Model format and Import-Export: There Skute format

Usage

There are many videos on YouTube for learning how to use Blender and how to design for There.

The following are highlights specific to designing with Blender for There. It was written using Blender 3.2.0.

Templates

As a starting point for designing, download the updated There Builder Templates which contain files in Blender's native format.

In addition, the Developer Tool can be used to download existing builder items in Blender format. Find the item and click the View link to get the option to download.

Formats

Depending on the type of design, one of the following formats will be used:

  • Model - The traditional format for builder items which includes decorations, vehicles, and props.
  • Skute - A format for avatar assets which can be deformed by skeleton animations and spa controlled phenomorphs.
